Brainwash Bombs MePa

Paste-up artist and documentary filmmaker Mr. Brainwash has bombed the Meatpacking District.

The images have been pasted onto 21-27 9th Avenue, a set of 19th-century buildings once a meatpacking plant and recently sold for a bundle. Wrote Steve Cuozzo in the Post, "sources estimated their combined acquisition and development costs at $150 million-plus.... The Meatpacking District's relentless gentrification shows no sign of abating."

What's planned for this site? A "dramatic retail presence."

These paste-ups appeared after the announcement of the sale--the buildings have been on the market for a long time. So how are they related to that deal and the future plans for the buildings? Is Mr. Brainwash making a statement?

Madonna and Angelina are shown as giant clones of each other, with matching Marilyn hair. Around the corner, there's Louis Armstrong toting Louis Vuitton.

Ali is pulling punches, wreathed in pretty flowers under the colorful corrugated awning that is sure to fall.

And Albert Einstein says "Love Is the Answer." But what is the question?

Whatever it is, the fashionistas don't care. They just want to look hot next to giant Angelina.

Will be interesting to see how long these remain... some huffy real-estate type may want them removed... Or perhaps the developer wanted these for a little artsy cred.

oh no, you might be right about the "cred."

MePa is simply a leper colony for trendies. Its day will soon end and like Soho, it will become a trashy location for T-shirts, sunglasses, and postcards.

Cred? Please.
Mr Brainwash is perhaps one of the least respected street artists currently around. His shit is was all over LA a couple years ago, and he did stage a solo show that was impressive in scale but dismissed by many as a Disney-esque approach. He's largely recognized as a hack.

So now you know.

You mean like the rest of the city?
